Graphic, vintage style sticker of Portland, Maine. Portland is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maine and the seat of Cumberland County.

"Resurgam" is the motto of the city of Portland, Maine which is latin for “I shall rise again”. The great fire of Portland, Maine, sometimes known as the 1866 great fire, occurred on July 4, 1866—the first Independence Day after the end of the American Civil War. This was the greatest fire yet seen in an American city. The city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, a reference to recovery from four devastating fires.

Portland was named after the English Isle of Portland, Dorset. In turn, the city of Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine. Portland itself comes from the Old English word Portlanda, which means "land surrounding a harbor".
