Maine Postcard 5"x7" | Katahdin Postcard | Mount Katahdin Postcard | Vintage Postcard
Graphic, vintage style postcard of Mount Katahdin, Maine. Illustrated by hand. The view is from Compass Pond near the Golden Road, an old logging road that goes from Millinocket to the Moosehead Lake region in Maine. Printed in Portland, Maine on heavy uncoated stock, matte finish.
Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in the U.S. state of Maine at 5,267 feet (1,605 m). Named Katahdin by the Penobscot Indians, which means "The Greatest Mountain", it is located in Piscataquis County, and is the centerpiece of Baxter State Park. It is a steep, tall masiff formed from a granite intrusion weathered to the surface.
The area around the peak was protected by Governor Percival Baxter starting in the 1930s. Katahdin is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, and is located near a stretch known as the Hundred-Mile Wilderness.
PROCESS
We start with compiling a library of pictures with varying angles of the subject of the poster. We sketch from the photos, editing and simplifying elements into pure geometric forms and shapes. The drawing is then scanned and used as the backdrop for our computer drawing. Editing, adding shapes and simplifying elements is at the core of the process. A moodboard is created to provide the color scheme. Working with flat geometric shapes to compose an interesting foreground and background and overall composition with an appealing color scheme is our ultimate goal.
