Graphic, vintage style poster of Portland, Maine. Portland is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maine and the seat of Cumberland County. Portland was named after the English Isle of Portland, Dorset. In turn, the city of Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine. Portland itself comes from the Old English word Portlanda, which means "land surrounding a harbor".

The great fire of Portland, Maine, sometimes known as the 1866 great fire of Portland, occurred on July 4, 1866—the first Independence Day after the end of the American Civil War. This was the greatest fire yet seen in an American city. The city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, a reference to recovery from four devastating fires.

"Resurgam" is the motto of the city of Portland, Maine which is latin for “I shall rise again”.

PROCESS
We start with compiling a library of pictures with varying angles of the subject of the poster. We sketch from the photos, editing and simplifying elements into pure geometric forms and shapes. The drawing is then scanned and used as the backdrop for our computer drawing. Editing, adding shapes and simplifying elements is at the core of the process. A moodboard is created to provide the color scheme. Working with flat geometric shapes to compose an interesting foreground and background and overall composition with an appealing color scheme is our ultimate goal.
